| I would have to say that my creative process and choreography style can be attributed to my personal experiences, professional training, the dancers who take a committed part in the company.
Born with permanent hearing loss in both ears, I’ve struggled to understand the sounds of the world that surround me. While life sometimes has its ways of reminding me of my limitations in my ability to truly enjoy and capture the true beauty of music and sounds it has also forced me to focus on being receptive; to listen internally to my imagination and to allow that energy to flow out rhythm through my dances. This has led me to create a unique blend of dynamics in my movements. Within my predetermined choreography, changes occur according to the personality, possibility and emotional basis of the dancer. Hence, a dance originally created as introvert and sad can become joyful and energetic and vice versa. This entails a close, sometimes uneasy and often exhausting relationship between dancer and creator. I try to keep it fun though. With these materials, I communicate verbally and non-verbally. Dancing with DatuganDanceTheatre requires openness, trust, commitment and a “method-like” dancing. |
